MATH

Our math curriculum is a strong one.   It is based on the Connecticut Framework for Mathematics, the Connecticut Mastery Test objectives, and the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Everyday Mathematics (University of Chicago) is the program used in Grades K-6.  This series emphasizes a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations and frequent practice of basic skills.  Concepts are revisited regularly throughout the year to insure understanding by all students.  Math content includes the following content strands: operations and computation, numeration, data and chance, geometry, measurement, patterns and algebra.

As we begin each new math unit, families will receive a newsletter which provides an overview of the concepts taught in the upcoming unit, offers examples of skills, and suggests ways to practice math skills at home, often through games and simple everyday activities.  Click here to download the Family Newsletter.

Practical ways to practice math at home would include:

  • Identifying coin values
  • Counting mixed coins (dimes, nickels, pennies)
  • Telling time to the hour and half-hour
  • Skip counting by 2, 5, and 10
  • Measuring objects (inches, feet, centimeters, pounds)
  • Practicing addition and subtraction math facts
  • Using calendars
