G1 Sight Words

Sight Wordskpwowc.jpg

Sight Words are words that children should recognize immediately (in 3 seconds) without sounding out.  In order to be able to read these words quickly, children need repeated opportunities to see them in print.  Your child will benefit greatly from practicing these words daily.

When practicing, limit the list to about 10 words, 7 that are familiar and 3 that are new.  Use the same list until all 10 words are comfortably familiar.  Then remove 3 words (from the original familiar words) and add 3 new ones.  In this way, children are not overwhelmed but are still being challenged.  Keep the words visible, if possible.  Make flash cards and keep them on a WORD WALL, which could be a bedroom door or bulletin board.  They are especially fun to read after dark with a flashlight!
