LMC Program

LMC Program

General Overview

Throughout the grades, a primary objective is to help students become independent users of the resources available to them in our library media center.

By the end of third grade, students have been taught how to use the online catalog and how to locate books.  They've also explored literary genres and various acclaimed authors and series popular for their ages and reading levels.

We continue to talk about and share "good books" in grades four and five.  A main objective for fourth and fifth graders is to provide experiences that require them to meaningfully and purposefully use "library skills" while also supporting language arts, content area, and technology skills.  Application and integration of skills becomes the norm in the intermediate and upper grades where students are "reading to learn."  Reading for enjoyment and to expand a student's view of the world continues to be actively promoted.

A standards-based library media program should reinforce, deepen, and enhance what students are learning in the classroom.  The library media specialist collaborates with classroom teachers regularly throughout the year.

The LMC is open to students and teachers all day, every day.  Elementary students are encouraged to use the library as they need to, not just when they have scheduled classes.  Students are invited to borrow books, use computers, or do research work independently or in small groups.  Middle school students often come to work independently and in small groups during remediation times and during the hour after their day is over (2:30-3:30 PM).  Middle school teachers regularly bring classes for research and project work.
